Universities are where people get their education in the fields of their choice, as well as to meet new friends and to work to make a living. As an up-and-coming university in Southeast Asia, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has what it takes to be one of leading institutions of higher learning in the region. Within a short span of 50 years, UPM has expanded beyond imagination: it has grown by leaps and bounds to be what it is today. “A passage to academia†chronicles UPM’s journey (its successes and failures) since 1971. UPM’s journey is depicted through the eyes of a former professor in soil science at the Faculty of Agriculture, who has spent the last 50 years of his academic life at the university.
UPM was established mainly to meet the demand for trained workers in agriculture, who were needed for the fast-developing Malaysia. Originally named in 1971 as “Universiti Pertanian Malaysiaâ€, it was later changed in 1997 to “Universiti Putra Malaysiaâ€. This was a fitting tribute to Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the Father of Independence of Malaysia. What went through in this green campus after the name change will be discussed during this webinar. Advice shared during this webinar would be useful for young academics, so that their journey in the academia will be blessed and their dreams realized in this university.
