Agribusiness Students Gain In-Depth Insights into Rice Seed Production in Sungai Burong

TANJUNG KARANG, 9 July
– Bachelor of Agribusiness Science with Honours students participated in an academic visit to the Rice Seed Production Centre of the Selangor State Farmers' Organisation (PPN Selangor) in Sungai Burong as part of the International Agribusiness Marketing course under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Juwaidah Sharifuddin.

During the visit, the students received a comprehensive briefing from the Centre Manager, Tuan Haji Zulkarnain Ismail, on the rice seed production process, covering every stage from nursery establishment to processing at the seed plant. The students also toured the nursery plots, where the MR297 rice variety is cultivated for planting in the Sawah Sempadan and Sungai Burong paddy-growing areas. The visit was further accompanied by the Deputy General Manager of PPN Selangor, Puan Noor Baiti Zakaria.

According to Muhammad Humam bin Mohamad Amran, a second-year Bachelor of Agribusiness Science student, the visit provided valuable exposure to the industry's marketing processes while enabling students to analyse the economic and cultural factors influencing the sector.

"The visit gave us the opportunity to observe firsthand how marketing is implemented within the rice seed industry. This experience has enhanced our understanding of how the theories learned in the classroom are applied in real industrial settings," he said.

In addition to learning about the seed production process, the students were introduced to the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technology at the processing plant, where it is utilised to monitor operations and improve operational efficiency.

The programme provided students with direct exposure to the day-to-day operations of the rice seed industry, thereby strengthening their understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of agribusiness while enhancing their appreciation of modern agricultural technologies.
