INAUGURAL LECTURE MANAGEMENT PROCESS TIMELINE

INTRODUCTION

This document acts as key reference for newly appointed Professor in preparing their Inaugural Lecture manuscript. We aim to publish a high-quality academic publication that is consistent in terms of format and content hence it is compulsory for the Author (Professor) to adhere to all requirements. This will ensure that the manuscript can be published before the Inaugural Lecture Ceremony takes place. 

 

DATE CONFIRMATION

  1. The date for the Inaugural Lecture Ceremony is determined by the UPM's Centre for Strategy and Corporate Relations (PSPK) and will be announced in their annual calendar. This scheduling is made after obtaining the confirmation of the Professor’s official appointment from the Registrar.
  2. Based on the confirmation date, UPM Press Centre (PPUPM) will issue a book publication reminder together with the Guidelines of the Inaugural Lecture Manuscript Submission to the Author (Professor).

 

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

  1. The finalised manuscript must be submitted to PPUPM within twelve (12) weeks before the official inaugural ceremony. The allotted time is based on PPUPM’s standard procedures in managing the content, language editing, cover designing, proofreading, ISBN application and producing a dummy which will be verified by the Author for printing.
  2. The manuscript should be written and formatted using the Microsoft Word, font size 12pt, Times New Roman and double line spacing. The Author is also required to submit the following to PPUPM;
  3. One (1) hard copy and one (1) soft copy of the manuscript.
  4. One (1) full length portrait of the Author (professor) in PhD graduation gown
  5. Illustrations: maps, diagrams, charts and tables should be prepared clearly and suitable for printing in a book measuring 6 inches X 9 inches. Actual text space is 4 inches X 6.5 inches (24 pixels X 39 pixels). Only well-defined and properly captioned illustrations will be printed.

 

AUTHORSHIP

  1. Authors (Professors) have a responsibility to present their work with the intellectual integrity and should guarantee that they have written entirely original works.
  2. This manuscript must at all costs avoid copyright infringement and does not contain anything obscene, vulgar, degrading or defamatory.
  3. The Author is solely responsible for the manuscript he writes.
  4. As key reference, the guidelines should be observed thoroughly to ensure the transformation of an Inaugural Lecture manuscript to a high-quality publication. It outlines the standard form and style of a solid manuscript which later can be defended by a Professor when it is published as a monograph.

 

LANGUAGE

The Inaugural Lecture and its publication must be delivered and published in Malay or English. Abstracts must be provided in Malay or English.

 

NATURE OF TEXT AND CONTENT OF LECTURE

  1. The Inaugural Lecture manuscript must be an original work of a Professor that has never been published and can be written in Malay or English.
  2. The manuscript should process the development and trends of the field of knowledge that is pursued, occupied or that is related to the expertise of a Professor.
  3. The manuscript shall attest to the achievements in the scholarly affairs of a Professor.
  4. The manuscript shall present the development of empirical findings in the field of knowledge of a Professor as well as emphasising the contribution of the Professor.
  5. The manuscript should contain literature highlights of the field being professed.
  6. The manuscript should monitor and evaluate the development and progress in the field of knowledge of a Professor, then to be shared with colleagues some of the ideas-theories that will be conceived in the future.
  7. The manuscript should present and explore new theories based on one’s own (primarily) research and the research of others.
  8. The manuscript is comprehensively associated or signifies the teaching, research and publications of a Professor with the lecture presented.
  9. The manuscript should disseminate knowledge through finding related to the field, industry, society, and others which, established the manuscript as not focussing on a narrow field of specialisation.
  10. The manuscript must be not less than 15,000 words, i.e. 60 pages of A4 paper, double line spacing and not more than 100 pages after being formatted with diagrams, illustrations, tables and so on.

 

BOOK CONTENTS AND ANATOMY

With reference to the Chicago Manual of Style (16th Edition) publication handbook, the basic anatomy or structure of the book must contain the following:

  1. Front Cover/Book Cover The cover (paperback) and backbone that combines the front with the back and contents
  2. Preliminary Section (Prelim)
    • Half title page
    • Full title page (lecture’s title, Author’s full name, academic approval, date and venue of the Inaugural Lecture ceremony)
    • Acknowledgement
    • List of Contents
    • Abstract
  3. Body matter
    • Text or content (MINIMUM 4 TOPICS)
    • Conclusion
  4. Back matter
    • References
    • Biodata/Biography (90% regarding a Professor's scholarship)
    • List of Inaugural Lectures
    • Index

 

BIODATA

Biodata of Professor/Author should be stated briefly; it should highlight his/her higher education, career, field of teaching, field of research and research results, publications, contributions to society related to academia, involvement of associations related to academia and academic awards (as well biodata that supports the thrust field of the Inaugural Lecture manuscript). Experience in primary and secondary schools need not be included.

 

REFERENCE SYSTEM

  1. The reference list of the Author’s own work should support the essence of the manuscript presented. Authors must also ensure that each entry in this reference list is referenced in the text. Avoid including irrelevant reference lists.
  2. Using a system of references and Author’s notes - current dates of source of documentations. If numbered notes are required, use them systematically. Notes will be placed as endnotes and not as footnotes.
  3. Do not cite the second material as the primary source of reference; for example student statistics quoted from newspapers are not the primary source.

 

PRINT QUANTITY

  1. For each Inaugural Lecture series, PPUPM will only print 500 copies. Of this amount, 300 copies will be given to the Author for distribution during the Inaugural Lecture Ceremony and a total of 150 copies for distribution to other UPM’s entities. PPUPM will keep the remaining 50 copies for archiving purposes at the National Library of Malaysia and as reference materials.
  2. The printing cost for first 500 copies shall be borne by the University and any additional print must be borne by the Authors.

 

AKCNOWLEDGEMENT BY THE DEAN/HEAD OF PTJ

  1. Before being submitted to PPUPM, the manuscript of the Inaugural Lecture must be verified by the Dean/Head of PTJ and submitted through the Office of the Dean/Head of PTJ.
  2. This acknowledgment is a proof that the manuscript of the Inaugural Lecture has been reviewed and approved for publication by a Publication Committee at the PTJ level.
