Influenza Outbreak

INFORMATION ON CURRENT INFLUENZA LIKE ILLNESS (ILI) AND SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTION (SARI)

ILI and SARI has been of public health concern since end of december 2019.

On 4th January 2020 press statement by Director General of Health Malaysia there has been an increase incidents of ILI especially children under 5.

Since then University Health Centre has commenced surveillance on the case which shows increased number of patients with ILI symptoms. To date no critical cases identified.

University Health Centre has set up a triage counter for early detection of at risk patients with designated isolation consultation room.

Health personnels are urged to comply with infectious disease control when handling such cases for example using complete PPE and regular hand washing/sanitizing.

Campus residents are advised to practise the following preventive measures:

  • Ensure to maintain high level of self hygiene, frequent hand washing/sanitizing, cough etiquette, and are encouraged to get influenza vaccine from private health facilities.

For patients who suffer from symptoms of influenza they are advised:

  • To get rest at home and to avoid crowded or public places. To wear face mask when going out.
  • To cover nose and mouth with hand towel when cough or sneezing.
  • To dispose it afterwards.
  • To seek medical treatment if symptoms worsened such as persistent fever cough and sore throat.
