Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

 

OVERVIEW

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the Faculty of Agriculture, UPM offers researchers the opportunity to conduct in-depth research in agricultural fields. There are seventeen (17) fields offered at the FP:

  • Agronomy
  • Agricultural Extension
  • Agriculture Technology
  • Agriculture Genomics
  • Animal Behaviour and Welfare
  • Animal Production
  • Animal Science
  • Aquaculture
  • Entomology
  • Horticulture
  • Land Resource Management
  • Pest Management
  • Plant Pathology
  • Plant Science
  • Soil Science

With the expertise of academic staff, complete research laboratories, and farm facilities, this program supports researchers to produce projects that are not only theoretically based but also applicable to real challenges in the agricultural sector.

Applicants are required to prepare a research proposal to ensure that their research area is compatible with the expertise of faculty members. Each student will be assigned an academic advisor if the student is successfully admitted, where this academic advisor will guide the student throughout his/her studies.

Curriculum Structure

  • The PhD program consist of course work, seminar, comprehensive examination (CE), thesis, and viva voce (thesis examination).
  • Candidates are required to complete 3 credit hours of coursework consisting of a compulsory research methodology course (3 credit hours).
  • Candidates are required to register for a seminar (1 credit) course which is offered every semester.
  • Candidates must pass the CE prior to commencing their research.
  • Candidates must present and pass the viva voce (thesis examination).


Entry Requirements

  • A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the UPM Senate; or
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia; or
  • Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the Faculty/School/Institute; or.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:
    i)  A Bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields with first-class or its equivalent.
    ii)  Undergo internal assessment by Faculty/School/Institute.; AND
    iii)  Any other requirement of the Faculty/School/Institute
    Note : For the applicant admitted from a Bachelor's degree to PhD, the applicant shall not be awarded a Master Degree if the applicant fails his viva voce.
  • An applicant who is in the final semester of his master study programme may be considered for provisional admission subject to his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the Doctoral Degree programme admission requirements.
  • Fulfil other requirements specified by the Faculty/School/Institute for each programme

English Requirements

For international candidates only:

  • Band 5.0 - 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Version); or
  • Score 45 - 78 for TOEFL IBT (Including Home Edition); or
  • Band 3 - 4 for MUET; or
  • Score 47 - 62 for PTE Academic; or
  • Score 106 - 109 for CIEP at ELS Language Centre, UPM

Note: The validity period for English language qualification should not exceed two years.
