GOAT FARMING COURSE ENHANCES PARTICIPANTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
SERDANG, 16 May 2026 – A total of 47 participants attended the Goat Farming Course held at Farm 15, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Organised by the Faculty of Agriculture in collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), the programme aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in systematic, viable, and sustainable goat farming practices.

The course was conducted by Dr. Suraya Mohamad Salleh, a lecturer from the Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, who possesses extensive expertise in ruminant livestock production and management. Throughout the programme, participants received comprehensive exposure through a combination of theoretical and practical sessions focusing on various aspects of commercial goat farming management.

In addition, participants had the opportunity to take part in practical training sessions conducted at the livestock facilities of Farm 15. Through these field activities, participants gained first-hand exposure to goat housing systems, breeding techniques, livestock health assessment, management of sick animals, and basic treatment methods for bloat, a common condition affecting small ruminants.
This hands-on learning approach enabled participants to gain a clearer understanding of Good Animal Husbandry Practices while enhancing their confidence in managing livestock more effectively. Participants also had the opportunity to interact directly with instructors and farm officers to obtain guidance and share experiences regarding real-world challenges faced within the goat farming industry.
The organisation of this course had a positive impact on participants, particularly in strengthening their technical knowledge, livestock management skills, and awareness of the importance of animal welfare and biosecurity. The knowledge acquired through the programme is expected to enable participants to adopt more efficient and productive farming practices, thereby improving production outcomes and generating more sustainable income within the livestock sector.

The Faculty of Agriculture, UPM, remains committed to empowering human capital development and supporting the national food security agenda through the organisation of industry-oriented technical courses that address the current needs of the agricultural and livestock sectors.
